About The Race

A classic Cape Town event that merges mountain grit with city spirit, the Three Peaks Challenge is one of the most iconic and demanding trail races in South Africa. First completed in 1897 by CW Schneeberger, this route takes runners from the heart of the city to the top of Devil’s Peak, Table Mountain, and Lion’s Head — returning to Greenmarket Square after each summit. This isn't just a race. It’s a rite of passage.

Gear & Equipment

There are no formal kit checks, but personal safety is your responsibility. Conditions on the mountain can change rapidly, even if the city looks clear. Recommended Kit:

Waterproof jacket
Buff, beanie, and/or cap
Thermal base layer
Hydration pack or water bottles
Food, energy gels, electrolytes
Fully charged cell phone (keep it dry!)
First aid kit
Whistle and space blanket

Safety First

The Three Peaks Challenge is physically and mentally demanding. Concentration is essential, especially during descent. The weather can turn suddenly — dress appropriately, pace yourself, and look out for fellow runners.

The event takes place in an ecologically sensitive area. In the interest of Table Mountain National Park and the continued existence of the Three Peaks Challenge, please respect all rules: do not use erosion paths; do not litter; do not damage or remove indigenous vegetation; respect other Table Mountain National Park users and visitors; respect the cultural value of the area.
